How Does NightLase Snoring Therapy Work?

NightLase by Fotona is an innovative, patient-friendly nonsurgical laser treatment that uses light energy to induce a tightening effect by contracting the collagen in the oral mucosa tissue. Essentially, it tightens the tissue at the back of the throat, creating a more open airway that can reduce snoring and sleep apnea. While this treatment isn’t a cure for snoring and sleep apnea, it can dramatically reduce their symptoms and provide better sleep and overall health.

A NightLase treatment at River Park Dental and Esthetics is a quick, easy, and comfortable outpatient procedure that requires no anesthesia and only takes five 30-60 minute sessions spaced 21 days apart for best results. The laser energy gently warms the targeted tissue causing the collagen to contract and tighten. There is no special aftercare and no post-procedure pain or discomfort, allowing you to go right back to your normal routine afterward. Many patients have experienced up to a 50% reduction in snoring and sleep apnea after just one treatment. These results can last up to a year. NightLase treatments can be especially beneficial to patients who do not tolerate CPAP machines or oral appliances well.

Every patient is different but we have found that for many, Nightlase can provide you with restful sleep for up to 6 months to a year.
The time it takes for collagen in the mouth to regenerate and to tighten tissue after being exposed to laser energy is 21 days. To maximize Nightlase therapy, we must slowly build on the collagen regeneration process every 21 days. If sessions are skipped or missed, the collagen will not additively build up. You will start to lose collagen after 21 days which will not maximize the results you desire.
Nightlase is not a cure for sleep apnea. It will, however, open your airway and help reduce symptoms related to sleep apnea. Studies have found that multiple sessions of Nightlase has brought down a patient’s Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) to a healthy range. We still recommend you continue seeing your sleep doctor and checking your AHI to make sure you stay in a healthy range.
Each session lasts from 30 to 60 minutes.
While most patients do well with 5 sessions, some require more sessions to achieve further therapeutic effects. Some factors that may affect the length of treatment is the size of your tongue and the length, width, and laxity of your soft palate.
There are virtually no risks or side effects of having Nightlase Therapy other than possibly experiencing a dry throat for a few hours after treatment.
Every person is unique, however, Nightlase has been shown to be quite effective. Some patients may need more sessions to get the complete therapeutic effect.
